Grandmaster Flash

Mała wyspa karaibska Barbados ma kolejnego, po lekkoatletach, bohatera. Jest nim Joseph Saddler, lepiej znany jako Grandmaster Flash. Wprawdzie niedługo po jego narodzeniu (1.01.1958) rodzina Saddlerów przeniosła się do NY, do Bronxu, ale barbadoskie korzenie GMF są niezaprzeczalne. Kiedy był dzieciakiem, nie było jeszcze nawet zaczątków zjawiska zwanego teraz rapem, zachwycał się więc innymi rzeczami: jazzem, soulem i czarną muzyką. Mając około dwudziestki wstąpił do Samuel Gompers Vocational Technical High School, gdzie uczył się budowy i obsługi urządzeń technicznych.
W tym samym czasie robił uliczne imprezy wraz z ludźmi takimi jak MaBoya i DJ Pete Jones, uczył się także od samego Kool Herca, dzięki któremu zresztą zaczął się zajmować adapterami. Mniej więcej wtedy Joseph zarobił swój przydomek"Flash" (ang. "błysk"), wymyślił breaks, które polegają na puszczaniu danej sekwencji kawałka raz po razie z dwóch adapterów, na których leżą identyczne płyty, co daje efekt powtarzania dźwięku. I przy okazji owych breaks na tyle szybko poruszał rękami, że okrzyknięto go Arcymistrzem Błysku. Jego sława dotarła do uznanych już wtedy pierwszych MCs – Lovebug Starskiego i Cowboya, którzy podjęli z GMF współpracę, rymując do jego miksów. Zadziwiał wszystkich skreczując za plecami, spod stołu, stopami i innymi częściami ciała, czy rzucając igłę na obracającą się płytę prosto w beat!
Pierwszy powiedział "Ho!" Wraz z Cowboyem, Flash założył THE FURIOUS 5, grupę znaną ze swej choreografii i skórzanych strojów. Cowboy spopularyzował takie zawołania, jak "Throw your hands in the air, and wave'em like ya just don't care!", "Clap your hands to the beat!" i "Everybody say, ho!", które są podstawowymi zawołaniami na hip-hop'owych koncertach. Oprócz niego do zespołu należeli Melle Mel, Mr. Ness aka Scorpio, Kid Creole i Rahiem. 
Kurtis Blow i Duke Bootee współpracowali z zespołem, ale nigdy nie stali się jego członkami.
Zespół stał się na tyle znany, że zainteresowała się nimi firma Enjoy Records, wydając ich pierwszego singla w 1979 r. – "Superrappin", który poniósł klęskę przez nieudolną promocję. Następny singiel dla wytwórni Sugarhill Rec., "Freedom" z 1980 r., narobił już tyle zamieszania (50 tys. sprzedanych kopii), że zaraz potem Flash wydał pierwszą hip-hop'ową płytę, na której były zarówno sample, jak i scratch. Była to płyta "The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel" (1981). Flash i Furious 5 ruszyli na pierwszą hip-hop'ową trasę po Stanach. Kolejny singiel z 1982 wstrząsnął światem muzycznym. "The message" osiągnął platynę już w niecały miesiąc od dnia wydania! Pomimo świetnej sprzedaży, Flash nie zobaczył nawet złamanego centa i wytoczył Sugarhill proces. Przeniósł się z Raheimem i Kid Creole, do których dołączyli Mr. Broadway, Lavon, Shame i Larry Love, do innej wytwórni, a Melle Mel z resztą zostali na łonie Sugarhill, wydając płyty pod szyldem Grandmaster Melle Mel & Furious 5. W tym samym roku co "The message" Flash wystąpił w kultowym filmie Wild style. Dopiero w 1988 roku grupa znów się połączyła na ostatnim wspólnym albumie "On The Strength", a rok później Cowboy zmarł przedawkowawszy narkotyki. Później każdy poszedł własną drogą, choć grupa spotkała się jeszcze raz na krótko w 1994 r. w radiu HOT 97 FM, prowadząc wspólnie audycję "Mic check show"
Kontynuując solową karierę w latach 90-tych, Flash zajmował się wieloma rzeczami. Zaprojektował i wypuścił na rynek sprzęt dla DJ'ów "Flashformer". Zajął się także produkcją, pomagając m.in. takim artystom jak Roxanne Shante, Essence, Color Me Badd, Terminator X. Może ostatnio Flash poszedł wreszcie na emeryturę? Nic z tego, nadal produkuje, skreczuje, nagrywa płyty i ma swoją wytwórnię. Pracuje także z wykonawcami klubowymi, jak np. Groove Armanda i Fat Boy Slim. W 2002 wydał swą ostatnią, jak do tej pory, płytę "Essential Mix", z którą był nawet na tournee w Wielkiej Brytanii. Cały czas pracuje przy stole mikserskim, cały czas z muzyką. A dla relaksu ów czterdziestosześcioletni pan ogląda kreskówki.
