Kool Herc

DJ Kool Herc (wł. Clive Campbell ur 16 kwietnia 1955 na Jamajce) uchodzi za ojca chrzestnego Hip-Hop’u. W wieku 12 lat wyjechał z rodzimej wyspy i osiadł na południowym Bronxie, gdzie rozpoczął proces tworzenia tej jakże ciekawej i szeroko pojętej kultury. Swoim lokalnym słuchaczom starał się serwować jamajski dj’ing, niestety reggae nie było wtedy uważane za zbyt ciekawy rodzaj muzyki. Wtedy Kool Herc postanowił przenieść się na miejscówki będące na powietrzu (później były to przede wszystkim parki). Wszystko zaczęło się od 1520 Cedric Avenue, czyli adresu rodziny Clive’a. Herc dobrze zdawał sobie sprawę z tego jakie kawałki ruszają publikę, jednak najbardziej interesowało go robienie w piosenkach break’ów.
Te momenty, kiedy ustawały wokale, a grał jedynie bit. Pragnienie utrwalenia tego momentu na dłuższy czas okazało się dla Hip-Hop’u niezmiernie ważne. Clive kupował dwa identyczne winyle i puszczał je na dwóch osobnych woskach. Całość opierała się na tym, że puszczał break beat z jednego winyla, następnie przerywał i to samo zapodawał na drugim gramofonie. Najlepszych break beat’ów szukał wszędzie, nie miało dla niego najmniejszego znaczenia jaki jest to rodzaj muzyki.
Niektórzy twierdzą, że był pierwszym dj’em, który kupował dwie takie same płyty jedynie dla 15-sekundowego fragmentu. 
Kool Herc swoją pierwszą profesjonalną imprezę zrobił w Twilight Zone w 1973 roku. Dzieciaki z Harlemu i Bronxu po prostu ubóstwiały Kool Herc’a, jego styl dał początek pojęcia b-boy. Chłopaki z Bronxu tańcząc do jego break beat’ów stworzyli taniec, dzisiaj już powszechnie znany i uwielbiany „break dance”. Stworzył ekipę, która działała pod szyldem Herculords. Gdy Dj’e (których przybywało coraz więcej) zaczęli stawać się realnym zagrożeniem, Herc usuwał etykiety wszystkich swoich nagrań, tak aby nikt nie mógł ukraść jego beatów. Z czasem kręcenie płytami na deckach stawało się intensywniejsze i Herc nie mógł już utrzymywać takiego samego kontaktu z publiką jak kiedyś. Oczywiste było, iż potrzebuje kogoś do pomocy, kogoś kto nawijał by zamiast niego, jednym słowem potrzebował MC(Master of Ceremony), czyli Mistrza Ceremonii. W ten oto sposób Coke La Rock został chyba pierwszym w historii emcee. Następnym klubem w którym występował Kool Herc był Sparkle. W roku 1977 jego kariera zaczęła powoli zwalniać, gdyż coraz popularniejsze stawały się grupy Grandmaster Flash’a i Afrika Bambaaty. Na dodatek pewnej felernej nocy został trzy razy pchnięty nożem. Wystąpił w filmie „Beat Street” gdzie zagrał samego siebie, a ostatnio udzielił się na albumach Chemical Brothers i Terminatora X.
